I lost myself somewhere along the way

This month’s Reflection takes a different turn. Instead of sharing my own thoughts, I’m sharing Janie’s powerful journey through her YQ course. Her reflections reveal how the experience shaped not just her learning, but many areas of her life — offering insights worth hearing about.

Take care and be blessed,
Col

I have no regrets in my life, I am grateful for everything I have and proud of all that I have achieved, but I do wish I had found YQ when I was a much younger me. I would have been unashamedly kinder to myself, and I would have backed myself way more. I would have given myself permission to expect prosperity and abundance in my life without feeling unworthy or selfish. I can also think of a few difficult and unpleasant situations in my life that I know I would have handled and responded to very differently, with honesty, empathy and Love.
Like many of us, I’m sure, the first part of my adult life was about my friendships – getting up to mischief and having as much fun as we could possibly find. From there, I went straight into the second part without skipping a beat, and my life became about my family and taking care of everyone around me.
I didn’t stop for a moment in between to figure out who I was or what I wanted for or from myself.
I got so caught up in the constant pushing and daily routine of life that I forgot myself – my needs, passions, and identity silently slipped away and I completely burned myself out in the process.
Working through the YQ course with Colin was like switching the light on in a room I didn’t even know was dim.
I realised that the voice in my head driving the choices, actions and habits that had shaped my life was very often not my own – I had been parroting my parents, my partner, the news, and social media… This voice was strongly influenced by past experiences that I hadn’t let go of yet.
Through the sessions I learned to silence the noise and allowed my own voice to start speaking to and for me, letting go of conditioning and preconceived ideas, and the unnecessary guilt and blame, towards myself and others, that I had been holding on to so tightly. I became consciously aware of the influences, mindset, and bad habits that were running my life and holding me back.
I then started to develop new healthy daily habits that support me through difficult times and help me to thrive. I know now that it’s not only okay but completely necessary to prioritise my needs, protect my peace, and pursue my joy.
In moments when I find myself feeling unsettled, I realise that I have slipped back into my old ways and have neglected myself and my new rituals.
This is where the YQ symbol comes in. Each module of the course is supported by a visual representation made up of different parts of the YQ symbol that can be used as helpful reminders to work through the lessons again.
It’s never too late to turn it around.

It started in a meeting. Thandi wanted to move fast. Ship it, test it, fix it on the way. Pieter wanted to get it right first. Check the numbers. Then check them again.Neither of them was wrong. That was the problem. The disagreement didn't blow up. It went quiet....

A Fine Waste of Time

There is a small piece of paper stuck to Colin’s laptop. It says: “The things that you schedule are the things that get done.” Responsible. Organised. Grown-up. Colin is nowhere near the laptop. He is lying on the lawn with a puppy.I have been watching him for some...
