I’ve been reminded recently, that some of the most powerful leadership decisions aren’t strategic — they’re deeply human.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of working with a remarkable payroll team spread across the USA, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Europe and Sri Lanka.
On paper, they were already a strong team. They delivered. They supported one another. They got the job done.
But underneath that, like so many teams around the world right now, there was also pressure. Change. Uncertainty. Fatigue. Questions around value, purpose and balance.
What humbled me most about this journey wasn’t simply that the sessions were “successful”. It was the honesty, openness and willingness of people to pause for a moment and reflect on themselves, their work, and each other.
Some of the feedback that stayed with me included:
“Colin helped me think about things differently.”
“I’m able to frame things better now and feel less anxious and stressed.”
“I feel more effective, productive and settled.”
And perhaps most meaningful of all was hearing from their leader, Robyn, that the outcome exceeded her expectations.
That says a lot about her leadership.
Because this didn’t happen because a company mandated training or because somebody needed to tick a development box.
It happened because a leader cared enough about her people to create space for them to breathe, reflect, reconnect and grow — both individually and collectively.
One of the things I continue to learn through YQ is that people rarely need more pressure, more noise or more “motivation”.
More often, they need perspective; grounding; clarity; healthier boundaries; and a reminder that what they do matters.
When individuals begin to reconnect with their own value, teams change naturally. Communication changes. Energy changes. Trust deepens. People become calmer, clearer and more intentional in how they work and interact.
And interestingly, performance often improves as a result — not because people are being pushed harder, but because they are operating from a healthier place internally.
To leaders everywhere: never underestimate the impact of creating genuine space for your people.
Not every investment in a team needs to begin with strategy, systems or productivity metrics. Sometimes the greatest value comes from helping people reconnect with themselves and with each other.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity, and incredibly encouraged by what this Team achieved together.
